Overview:
Falls are one of the leading causes of injuries on construction sites — many of which involve ladders. Using ladders improperly, even for a few seconds, can result in serious injury or death.
Key Safety Points:
1. Inspect the Ladder:
- Look for damaged or missing rungs.
- Check for oil, grease, or debris on steps.
- Ensure the ladder is stable and feet are not worn out.
2. Setup Properly:
- Set the ladder on a firm, level surface.
- Maintain a 4:1 angle (for every 4 feet up, 1 foot out).
- Extend ladders 3 feet above landing when accessing a roof or platform.
3. Climb Carefully:
- Maintain 3 points of contact at all times.
- Never carry tools in your hands while climbing.
- Face the ladder while going up or down.
4. Use the Right Ladder:
- Never use a metal ladder near electrical sources.
- Do not exceed the ladder’s weight rating.
- Use a step ladder only when fully opened and locked.
Discussion Questions:
- When was the last time you checked your ladder before using it?
- Have you ever witnessed a ladder-related near-miss? What happened?
